Import Regulations for Used Cars from Japan to New Zealand

  • Inspection
    JEVIC & MAF inspection. Must meet NZTA standards
  • Age Limit
    Not older than 12 years
  • Steering Type
    Right Hand Drive (RHD)

Important Documents:

  • Passport Copy
  • Registration Certificate from Japan (English)
  • Bill of Lading with Odometer readings at the time of sales and at the time of import
  • Continuous Ownership Proof: Insurance Certificate or Vehicle License
  • Customs Client Code Application (New Zealand Customs)
  • Commercial Invoice

Import Restrictions:

  • Following frontal impact, and EURO 4 emission standards should be followed while importing a car to New Zealand:
    • For Petrol Vehicles

      CO: 1.0g/km

      THC: 0.10g/km

      NOx: 0.08g/km

    • For Diesel Vehicles

      CO: 0.50g/km

      HC + NOx: 0.30g/km

      NOx: 0.25g/km

      PM: 0.025g/km

  • OR
    • Must have a 3-digit emissions code such as 'ABA', 'CBA', 'DBA', 'DAA', 'LDA', 'ZAA', displayed on the original Japanese export certificate, complete inspection certificate or auction sheet

    • MC class passenger (off-road) vehicles entering on or after 1 March 2016 in New Zealand must be fitted with an electronic stability control (ESC)
